Massive Fire Erupts at Sainsbury’s Thameside Depot
Chaos broke out at Sainsbury’s Thameside depot in Charlton on Saturday night after a refrigeration unit caught fire in a trailer parked next to the warehouse. Around 70 firefighters rushed to the scene to battle the blaze.
Staff Evacuated as Flames Spread
All staff on site were swiftly evacuated once the fire alarm sounded. The fire started just after 6.30pm, igniting two HGV trailers at the chilled distribution centre on Lombard Wall.
Firefighters Contain Blaze, Warehouse Damaged
- Six fire engines and an aerial ladder from London Fire Brigade tackled the inferno.
- The fire spread towards the warehouse, which measures approximately 20m by 30m.
- Thanks to rapid response, crews limited damage to the trailers, with only smoke damage affecting the warehouse side.
Warning Issued After Second Incident
This fire follows a similar accidental blaze at the same warehouse months ago. Fire services are now urging businesses to keep vehicles away from buildings to prevent future fires.
An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause.
