Three Jailed Over Brutal Upminster Home Invasion

Three men have been slapped with hefty prison sentences for a terrifying robbery in Upminster where an 11-year-old boy was shot. The gang forced their way into a family home, threatened the occupants, and fled with £20,000 worth of jewellery and watches – all while the child was seriously injured.

Sentences handed down at Snaresbrook Crown Court

  • Anthony Lascelles, 34, from Hitchin Close, copped 18 years plus 5 years on extended licence.
  • Christopher Sargent, 28, of Macaulay Road, received 15 years with a 5-year licence extension after pleading guilty in November 2021.
  • Ajaypal Singh, 28, of Banks Way, was found guilty of robbery at trial and sentenced to a massive 20 years plus 5 years extended licence. He also admitted possession with intent to supply and having a bladed weapon.

Child shot during botched disguise robbery

On 1 May 2020, police were called to a home on Kerry Drive after receiving reports of a violent break-in. A man in his 40s was found with stab wounds to the head, and his young son had suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder.

The gang had knocked on the door claiming to be delivery drivers, but once inside, they overpowered the homeowner. They demanded money and threatened the boy, firing a shotgun legally kept at the property. Miraculously, the boy’s injuries were not life-threatening.

Police praise and community help key to justice

“Detective Constable Darren Warner’s intelligent and honest investigation was crucial,” said Her Honour Judge Lees. “He is an outstanding officer whom the MPS should be proud of.”

DC Darren Warner added: “This violent crime shocked the community and left a family traumatised. Thanks to the public’s help and detailed police work, we have achieved justice.”
