Controlling thug Michael Hyla packed a punch – then strangled his victim in a terrifying spree of abuse.

Violent Attacks and Spying Exposed

Michael Hyla punched his victim once and strangled her on a separate occasion in 2021. But his abuse went beyond physical violence.

Hyla used tracking apps on her phone, destroyed her passport, and installed hidden cameras to spy on her. The harassment spanned months, with attacks in April and August 2021.

Flouts Bail, Harasses Again

Arrested by Nottinghamshire Police on 4 October, Hyla showed no remorse. Just 20 minutes after leaving police custody, he broke bail by contacting the victim via social media.

He then spent much of the same day harassing her online before police swooped again and hauled him back in.

Jailed After Guilty Plea

Hyla, 45, from Mansfield, pleaded guilty to controlling and coercive behaviour, assault by beating, and causing actual bodily harm. On 18 May, Nottingham Crown Court sentenced him to three years behind bars.

Police Clamp Down on Violence Against Women

“Hyla is a violent and controlling bully who waged a deliberate and frightening campaign of abuse,” said Detective Constable Ella Redfern of Nottinghamshire Police.

“His actions were utterly contemptible, and I’m pleased he has been held to account.”

“We take violence against women and girls extremely seriously and will do everything in our power to investigate and bring offenders to justice.”

“We urge any victims or their families to come forward – just one call is all it takes for us to start our work and hold perpetrators responsible.”

“We also work with expert support groups to ensure victims get the help they need.”
