Thousands of UK Scam Victims to Receive Millions in Compensation
More than 3,500 Brits caught in a ruthless international mail scam are finally getting cash back. After a massive four-year probe, National Trading Standards (NTS) teamed up with the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to recover £530,000 for victims. This marks a fresh, bold approach to clawing back crime cash from overseas fraudsters.
How the Scam Worked: Targeting the Vulnerable
The conmen sent over seven million scam letters to UK homes between 2014 and 2018. These letters promised guaranteed cash prizes but demanded upfront fees of £25 to £40. Many victims, including older people living alone and those with health issues, fell for it repeatedly before realising the truth. Some lost thousands.
Crackdown on US-Based Crime Gang
NTS traced the fraud to a Kansas criminal ring led by Kevin Brandes, William Graham, and Charles Floyd Anderson. Their “Next Gen” sweepstakes scheme flooded the globe with deceptive mailers while also running a vintage car sales racket. After legal action in 2018, the gang forfeited $30 million, with $25 million dedicated to victim compensation worldwide.
How Victims Will Get Their Money
The UK compensation scheme is the first of its kind across international borders. Victims will receive pre-loaded cards usable in shops or for bank deposits, handed out via local trading standards offices.
