Loud Bang Sparks Panic Across North London
North Londoners were left rattled this evening (Monday, November 28) after a massive bang echoed across the skies. Smoke was spotted billowing in the air, with many pinpointing the noise to Belfast Road in Hackney.
Stoke Newington at the Heart of the Mystery
Most witnesses said the sound came from the Stoke Newington area in Hackney, but reports also flooded in from as far as Camden and Stratford. The deafening “explosion” had locals worried and scrambling for answers.
No Trace of Explosion Found by Emergency Crews
Firefighters and police officers rushed to the scene, scouring the area for signs of blasts or fire. But their 30-minute search came up empty.
A Met Police spokesperson said: “This evening, there have been several calls about loud bangs in the Stoke Newington neighbourhood. Significant occurrences have not been reported to us. Thunder and lightning seem to be what made the noise.”
The London Fire Brigade backed up the police account.
“Firefighters carried out an extensive search of the local area after reports of an explosion on Belfast Road in Hackney. They found no fire,” a spokesperson said.
Lightning Strikes to Blame?
LightningMaps.org revealed a series of lightning strikes hit Camden, Stoke Newington, Hampstead, and Stamford Hill back-to-back around the same time. The natural storm activity is likely behind the mysterious explosion noise that shook North London tonight.
