A violent child rapist, identified as 39-year-old Shane Nash, was captured by police after a vigilant officer noticed his distinctive walk. The arrest took place on January 31 when Nash was walking with two companions along Muirfield Road in Top Valley. The officer, travelling in a marked patrol car, recognized Nash based on his unique gait.
Just two days prior to his arrest, Nash had committed the heinous act of raping a teenage girl. The assault occurred after he grabbed her in a dark alleyway near Rise Park and made threats against her. Portions of the incident were captured on CCTV, and footage of the assailant was later circulated through a high-profile media appeal.
After viewing the footage, the observant officer immediately recognized Nash’s distinct walking style, characterized by his high, square shoulders. Noticing the similarity in his attire to that of the suspect, she and her colleague promptly turned around and approached Nash, requesting him to stop. It became apparent that he was wearing the same clothes and distinctive grey trainers he had on during the attack.
Further damning evidence was discovered when officers searched Nash’s bag and uncovered a black beanie hat and red sleeping bag, both referenced by the victim. Despite irrefutable DNA evidence linking him to the crime, Nash vehemently denied the allegations against him until his second court appearance in March, where he finally pleaded guilty to one count of rape and one count of attempted rape.
During his sentencing, Nash received a life sentence and will serve a minimum of 15 years. He was also added to the sex offenders’ register for life.
Detective Inspector Craig Hall, who led the investigation for Nottinghamshire Police, expressed his acknowledgement of the heinous nature of the crime and the impact it had on the victim and her family. He commended the victim for her remarkable courage and dignity throughout the legal process and extended his thoughts to her. DI Hall highlighted Nash’s lack of remorse and denial of the offence, despite overwhelming evidence against him.
DI Hall credited the arresting officer and her colleague for their excellent police work, along with the countless other officers who tirelessly contributed to bringing this dangerous individual to justice.
