The government is gearing up to extend pub licensing hours from 11pm to 1am on May 5, 6, and 7. This rare move aims to let the nation party harder for King Charles III’s big day and give a lift to the struggling hospitality sector.
Why the Late-Night Extension?
The Home Office calls it a chance for communities to unite. Home Secretary Suella Braverman said, “His Majesty the King’s coronation will be a historic moment in which our great nation and the entire Commonwealth will join together in celebration.”
She added, “Our country, and particularly our hospitality industry, has faced numerous challenges in recent years. The King’s coronation is an opportunity to boost our local businesses while celebrating with our communities.”
The Coronation Plans So Far
- The King will be crowned at Westminster Abbey, just like his mother.
- Faith leaders, MPs, peers, and foreign heads of state will attend.
- The grand procession will most likely see the King travel from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey in the traditional gold state coach.
- Expect a shorter ceremony than usual, lasting just over an hour.
- Guest numbers will be slashed from 8,000 to around 2,000 for a more intimate event.
- The event will be televised for all to witness at home.
