Knife and hammer robbers jailed after violent raids in Kent
Three thieves terrorise shops days apart
Zyon Elsom and Kane Sampson admitted two counts of robbery, possession of an offensive weapon, and carrying a knife. A jury also found Neil Clarke guilty of the same crimes following a trial at Canterbury Crown Court.
The crime spree began on Tuesday 9 March 2021 at a Premier Store in Queens Road, Broadstairs. Around 7.30pm, a shop worker was threatened with a knife and assaulted while the robbers demanded cash. They stuffed bags with alcohol, cash, and tobacco before fleeing the scene.
Hammer used to hold down staff during second raid
The second robbery struck just days later on Friday 12 March 2021 at a post office in Joy Lane, Whitstable at around 3pm. This time, a hammer was slammed onto a staff member’s hand, holding her at the counter. The other two men grabbed cigarettes and tobacco. The victim’s mobile phone was also stolen moments before the emergency alarm went off, forcing the robbers to flee.
Quick police chase leads to arrest
Kent Police acted fast. Officers spotted the trio near the A299 in Ramsgate shortly after the Whitstable job. The suspects tried to escape by car but were chased on foot and caught in a nearby field.
Officers recovered the hammer, clothing worn during the crimes, and other evidence after searching the suspects’ car and a property. All three were arrested and charged.
Harsh sentences for violent offenders
- Neil Clarke, 38, of Paragon, Ramsgate, was jailed for ten years.
- Zyon Elsom, 20, of no fixed address, received three years.
- Kane Sampson, 21, also of no fixed address, got three years too.
“This was a terrifying ordeal for the victims who were simply doing their jobs and should not expect to suffer such violence at the hands of criminals like these three,” said Detective Sergeant Jay Robinson from the Chief Constable’s Crime Squad.
“They are a danger to society and will go to great lengths to commit violent crimes with absolutely no regard for their victims. We are pleased all three have been jailed and a jury saw through Clarke’s lies. He is a prolific offender. The local community can rest easier knowing these men will be behind bars for a long time.”
