Plumber Loses Appeal Over Life Sentence for Mother-in-Law Murder
Simon Parks, a former plumber convicted of the brutal murder and sexual assault of his 79-year-old mother-in-law, Mari O’Flynn, has failed to get his life sentence reduced. He was sentenced to life with a minimum of 25 years after strangling her at their Newport home.
Appeal Thrown Out by Three Judges
Appearing by video link at the Court of Appeal in London, Parks challenged the length of his sentence. But the three-judge panel, including Mr Justice Jay, Lady Justice Carr, and Judge Jeremy Richardson KC, rejected his bid unanimously. They agreed the original sentencing judge was right to factor in both aggravating and mitigating circumstances and to increase the sentence due to the sexual nature of the crime.
Chilling Details from Cardiff Crown Court
During the trial, shocking details emerged of Parks violently punching Mrs. O’Flynn before strangling her on May 24, 2022. He also sexually assaulted her, though when is unclear. Parks, 52 at the time, pleaded guilty and was sentenced last November.
Family Pay Tribute, Demand Privacy
The discovery of Mrs O’Flynn’s body sparked a police probe. The post-mortem showed she died from manual strangulation. Parks was caught with facial injuries and admitted to the attack, citing a dispute over cigarettes.
“We have lost someone very special,” the family said, remembering her sparkle, funny stories, and love of sports and endless cups of tea. They asked for privacy to grieve.
With the appeal dismissed, Parks will serve his full life sentence for this horrific crime.
