Two Men Convicted Over Tragic Death of Teen on Southampton Water
Michael Lawrence, 55, from Blackfield, and Michael Howley, 52, from New Milton, appeared at Winchester Crown Court today. Both were found guilty by a jury last month for their roles in a tragic boating accident that took the life of 15-year-old Emily Lewis in August 2020.
Serious Failings Lead to Fatal Crash
Lawrence was convicted of failing to maintain a proper lookout and safe speed during the crash. However, he was cleared of gross negligence manslaughter.
Howley, owner of the company operating the rigid inflatable boat (RIB) involved, was found guilty of failing to ensure the vessel was operated safely.
The fatal incident occurred on August 22, 2020, when Emily and her family were passengers on the RIB. The boat collided with a buoy on Southampton Water, resulting in Emily sustaining fatal injuries.
Suspended Sentences and Community Service
Judge Mr Justice Christopher Butcher handed down suspended prison sentences of 18 weeks for both men, suspended for two years. They must also complete 125 hours of unpaid community work.
“Your prosecution arose from a terrible and tragic event. Emily was a fun, caring young girl who would have grown up to be an amazing adult. Her death has left a void in her family’s lives. It was an incident with profound and lasting consequences, quite apart from the devastating fact of Emily’s death,” the judge said.
Family Speaks Out
Emily’s family released a heartfelt statement:
“After two-and-a-half long years, we have managed to get some of the justice that Emily so deserved and that the responsibility for her death as well as the life-changing injuries to the other passengers on board that day has finally been proven.
“Every one of us on the boat, including Mr Lawrence, were seriously affected both physically and mentally by the mistakes he made on that day.
“We appreciate that Mr Lawrence did not intend for these events to happen. However, his handling of the situation fell far below the expectations of the qualified mariner he was known to be.
“The careless guidance from Mr Howley, which if followed properly might have prevented the crash, and Mr Lawrence’s overconfidence led to serious injuries and tragically, Emily’s death.
“Not a day goes by without us missing Emily. The loss of someone so young and full of life is a burden we bear daily. We now hope to rebuild our lives and grieve our wonderful daughter.”
Police Comment on the Tragedy
Detective Chief Inspector Danielle Daltrey expressed sympathy for those affected:
“Our thoughts are with Emily’s family, friends, and all passengers on the RIB. Each has shown great courage during this harrowing time.
“No sentence can undo what happened, but we hope the family finds some closure.
“This tragic case highlights the crucial need for vessel owners and operators to follow maritime laws strictly. Even the most experienced skippers must stay vigilant and prioritise the safety of everyone on board.”
