Teen Murdered in Street Clash on Gateshead Estate

Tragedy struck the Springwell Estate on October 4 last year when 14-year-old Tomasz was caught in a deadly dispute. During a heated argument between his group of friends and another teenager, Tomasz was stabbed in the chest.

Despite desperate efforts by medics, Tomasz died from his injuries early the following morning.

15-Year-Old Charged with Murder and Knife Offences

Northumbria Police launched a murder investigation immediately. A 14-year-old boy, now revealed as 15-year-old Leighton Amies from Gateshead, was charged with murder and possession of a bladed weapon.

Amies also faced charges for assault relating to another victim. After a trial at Newcastle Crown Court, he was found guilty of murder, attempted assault on a second victim, and admitted possession of a knife.

Sentencing is scheduled for June 15 at the same court.

Police Warn of Deadly Consequences of Knife Crime

“This is a truly tragic case where a teenager has lost his life,” said Detective Inspector Chris Deavin of Northumbria Police. “Tomasz had his whole future ahead of him – he was a promising footballer and popular at school.

“Leighton Amies has been found guilty, but no sentence will ever bring Tomasz back.

“We want to send a clear message to anyone thinking of carrying a weapon or believing violence is acceptable – the consequences are catastrophic.

“This tragedy has destroyed multiple lives, not only Tomasz’s but also his family’s, friends’, and the perpetrator’s.”

Deavin also urged the community to help tackle violent crime. “We work hard with partners on prevention, educating youth about knife dangers and carrying out proactive police operations,” he added.

“We ask parents to talk to their children about knives and urge anyone with concerns to report them. If you suspect someone is carrying a weapon, speak to the police.

“Above all, we implore knife carriers to think again and stop.”
