In a bid to restore what he calls “common sense” in the NHS, Health Secretary Steve Barclay has announced plans to potentially ban transgender individuals from single-sex hospital wards. Speaking at the Conservative party conference, Barclay outlined a consultation to strengthen protections for women.

The current NHS guidance, issued in 2021, allows trans individuals to be placed on wards according to the gender they identify as. The proposed change would allocate separate rooms and areas for transgender patients, raising concerns among doctors about the practicality of such facilities.
