In a distressing case, Police Constable Ravi Canhye, a serving Dorset Police officer, has been found guilty of sexual offences, including two counts of rape, following an eight-day trial at Winchester Crown Court.
The jury delivered its verdict on Wednesday, 4 October 2023, convicting Canhye of a total of eight sexual offences. These include two counts of rape, one attempted rape, three assaults by penetration against one woman, and one assault by touching against a second woman. Both victims were known to the police officer.
The incidents occurred during a weekend in April 2022, and it’s crucial to note that Canhye was not on duty at the time. The severity of the charges underscores the gravity of the situation, especially considering the trust the public places in members of the police service.
On Thursday, 5 October 2023, the 47-year-old police officer is set to return to Winchester Crown Court for sentencing. Dorset Police Temporary Deputy Chief Constable Rachel Farrell expressed gratitude towards the victims for their courage in coming forward to report these “abhorrent crimes” and commended their strength throughout the court process.
Farrell emphasised the commitment of Dorset Police to thoroughly investigate offences and ensure that offenders are brought to justice while providing robust support for victims. She acknowledged the dedicated work of highly-trained detectives and specialist officers who contributed to bringing the case before the court.
The Deputy Chief Constable made it clear that there is no place in Dorset Police for individuals committing sexual offences, domestic abuse, or displaying discriminatory and abusive behaviors. Canhye, who was immediately suspended when the allegations surfaced, will now face misconduct proceedings.
