Amazon workers to strike for 4 days including Black Friday
More than 1,000 staff at Amazon’s Coventry warehouse are set to walk out for four days next month, threatening one of the busiest shopping spells of the year. The GMB union confirmed the strike dates as November 7-9 and the dreaded November 24 – Black Friday.
Pay dispute fuels strike action
The ongoing row between Amazon and its workers centres on pay and benefits. The GMB has been pushing for better wages and improved conditions throughout the year, and this latest strike signals a fresh escalation. Several walkouts have hit the company’s UK operations previously.
Amazon UK boss John Boumphrey fired back, insisting the firm already offers “competitive wages and benefits”. But workers say their demands are being ignored and fair pay remains out of reach.
Grocery inflation eases as shoppers hunt bargains
There’s a glimmer of good news for cash-strapped shoppers. Research from Kantar Worldpanel shows grocery inflation dropped to 11% in the month to October 1, down from 12.2%.
The fall is thanks to fierce price wars among supermarkets and an uptick in spending on discounted items. With the cost of living biting hard, Brits are snapping up bargains where they can. Price cuts on staples have also helped cool inflation.
New hotline launched to fight food fraud
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has launched a freephone hotline to crack down on food fraud — crimes involving fake or mislabelled ingredients. The watchdog reckons food fraud costs the UK between £410 million and nearly £2 billion every year.
The hotline offers a confidential way for those in the food industry to report dodgy practices, helping to protect shoppers and keep the food chain honest.
