Afghanistan Rocked by Third Major Quake in One Week
Afghanistan is reeling after a third powerful earthquake struck in just seven days. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) recorded a magnitude 6.4 tremor hitting Herat province, just north of the city of Herat. This latest quake adds fresh misery to a region still recovering from deadly shocks that killed nearly 2,500 people.
New Quake Sparks Landslides and Devastation
Wednesday’s 6.3 magnitude quake hit rural Herat hard. At least 80 injured, with a landslide blocking the crucial Herat-Toghondi motorway. In Chahak village alone, 700 homes were flattened. But miraculously, no deaths so far. Locals had already taken shelter in tents after Saturday’s disaster, helping to save lives.
Communities Struggle Amid Massive Devastation
The Taliban report 2,445 dead and thousands more hurt across the region, but details are scarce. Nearly 2,000 homes wiped out in 20 villages leaves thousands homeless. All of this is overwhelming an area with just one government hospital, leaving survivors desperate for aid and shelter.
