Lidl Dethrones Aldi As Uk's Cheapest Supermarket For Groceries In October 2023

Lidl has emerged as the UK’s cheapest supermarket for a basket of groceries in October 2023, ending Aldi’s 16-month reign, according to research conducted by consumer watchdog Which?.

The monthly analysis compares the average prices of popular groceries at eight major supermarkets in the country.

For a smaller basket of goods, Lidl was the cheapest, with an average cost of £74.58, closely followed by Aldi at £74.75. In terms of a larger trolley of items, Asda remained the most affordable, with an average cost of £328.42, while Waitrose was the most expensive at £378.08.

The analysis by Which? also highlighted the importance of accessibility and affordability during the ongoing cost of living crisis. It urged supermarkets to ensure that smaller convenience stores stock a range of essential budget lines to support a healthy diet, particularly in areas with a high demand.

The watchdog also called for clear unit pricing to enable customers to easily identify the best value products. Which? emphasised that supermarkets need to make these changes to help millions of people struggling to afford their groceries.
