North Yorkshire Cops Under Fire After Traffic Stop Turns Sour
A routine traffic stop in Tockwith, near Wetherby, has sparked a police probe. Two North Yorkshire Police officers are facing scrutiny after a black man was allegedly struck and pepper-sprayed during the arrest on January 26.
IOPC Launches Misconduct Investigation
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has stepped in amid claims that the man, believed to be in his 40s, was struck while restrained. North Yorkshire Police insist force was necessary, saying the man turned violent during the incident.
“The officers acted in response to the individual’s behaviour,” the force stated, defending their use of Pava spray and physical restraint.
Race Not Yet a Factor in Probe
While early reports spotlight the man’s race, the IOPC says there’s currently no evidence suggesting racial motivation. Investigators have taken statements from police and ambulance personnel who attended the scene.
Man Released on Bail, Investigation Ongoing
The man was arrested over the traffic incident but released on bail pending the inquiry. The IOPC’s focus is squarely on whether the level of force used was justified, particularly concerning the pepper spray and alleged strikes.
Both North Yorkshire Police and the IOPC promise to update the public as the probe continues.
