Hero Cop Dives Into Freezing Lake to Save Dog and Owner

Freezing weather is wreaking havoc across the county, and the dangers of frozen waters are very real. Yesterday (12 December), officers from Rotherham’s Off Road Bike Intervention Team proved just how quick thinking can save lives.

While patrolling Silverwood Nature Reserve in Thyrbergh, the team heard desperate shouts for help. From a nearby vantage point, they spotted a woman struggling in icy water, trying to rescue her dog. Without a second thought, PC Jamie Walker plunged into the freezing lake to save the frantic pooch.

He grabbed the dog, who was fighting to stay afloat, then helped the woman, knee-deep and clutching her other dog, to safety.

Dog Chased Swan onto Thin Ice

Officers learned the drama began when the dog, off its lead, gave chase to a swan. As the swan took flight, it shattered the thin ice, and the dog plunged into the bitter water after it.

Operational Support Unit Chief Inspector Lee Carlson warned: “Don’t think ‘it won’t happen to me.’ Freezing conditions demand a rethink of your usual routines—walk dogs on leads and stay away from frozen water.”

Winter Walks Carry Hidden Risks

PC Walker, who changed out of his wet clothes and continued his shift, stressed the lucky outcome. “Everyone ended up safe, though with soggy shoes. But things could’ve ended very differently, especially with recent tragedies like Solihull fresh in mind,” he said.

He urged pet owners and locals to be vigilant: “Know where your dogs play. Usual safe spots might not be safe in winter. Stay alert on your local walks—seasonal changes bring new dangers.”

Stay Safe Around Frozen Waters

  • Always keep dogs on leads near lakes and ponds during freezing weather.
  • Avoid walking on or near ice—thin ice can break without warning.
  • Be alert to changing weather conditions that affect your usual routes.
  • If you see someone in trouble, call emergency services immediately.

Frozen waters are no joke. Stay safe this winter and keep your furry friends out of harm’s way.
