Royal Family and Veterans Ready for 80th D-Day Anniversary
The nation’s finest are gearing up to mark the 80th anniversary of the legendary D-Day landings. King Charles, Queen Camilla, and the Prince of Wales will travel to Normandy this Thursday for a series of poignant commemorations. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is also set to join the royals at the British Normandy Memorial in Ver-sur-Mer.
Paratroopers Reenact Historic D-Day Jump
On the eve of the anniversary, hundreds of Armed Forces personnel will parachute into the very drop zone where history was made 80 years ago. The dawn will break over Juno Beach near Graye-sur-Mer, casting a solemn light on the daring airborne liberation of Normandy.
However, this year’s tributes will be slightly subdued as the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight aircraft won’t take part. The absence follows an ongoing investigation into the tragic death of pilot Mark Long, who died in a Spitfire crash near RAF Coningsby last weekend.
Veterans, Many Now Centenarians, Honoured in Normandy
Normandy veterans, some over 100 years old, are making the journey to northern France to salute their fallen comrades. WWII veteran Richard Aldred shared his emotions: “When I go to Normandy, I’ll guarantee to you I will shed a tear.” Among the heroes is centenarian Jim Miller, who recently received a surprise invitation to Buckingham Palace and a heartfelt birthday card from the King recognising his service.
Commemorative Events Across the UK Lead Up to Anniversary
- Monday: Veterans meet schoolchildren in Portsmouth, the nerve centre of the original D-Day operations, and tour Southwick House – General Eisenhower’s base.
- Tuesday: Veterans retrace their Channel crossing aboard naval vessels sailing in formation from Portsmouth Harbour, honouring their bravery.
- The eve of D-Day anniversary: A national commemorative event in Portsmouth will be attended by Charles, Camilla, and Sunak. A spectacular light show will recall the perilous sea crossing 80 years ago.
This landmark anniversary promises heartfelt tributes, royal presence, and stirring memories to honour those who shaped history with their courage and sacrifice.
