Parliament Square Unveils Powerful Tribute to Fallen Ukrainian Athletes Ahead of Paris 2024

A striking new display has been unveiled in Parliament Square to honour Ukrainian athletes who have lost their lives since Russia’s invasion. With the Paris 2024 Olympic Games just days away, this tribute shines a harsh spotlight on the devastating impact the war has had on Ukraine’s sporting community.

487 Ukrainian Athletes Killed in Russia’s Brutal War

  • Since the full-scale invasion in 2022, over 487 Ukrainian athletes—both Olympians and promising talents—have died defending their country.
  • More than 4,000 Ukrainian athletes remain actively involved in supporting the war effort on the frontline.
  • The new 3D display dramatically illustrates the ‘487’ figure, surrounded by sporting gear representing the fallen athletes’ disciplines.
  • Only 140 Ukrainian athletes will compete at Paris 2024, marking the smallest summer Olympic team in Ukraine’s history.

Faces of a Tragic Loss: Champions and Young Stars Taken Too Soon

The lives lost include former Olympian Oleksandr Pielieshenko, a Rio 2016 weightlifter who died defending Ukraine in May 2023. Also mourned is 11-year-old rhythmic gymnast Kateryna Diachenko, killed in a Russian attack on Mariupol early in the war.

Political Support and Moving Tributes

Foreign Secretary David Lammy said: “As the world gathers this summer to celebrate the very best of sporting talent, we must pause to remember the hundreds of Ukrainian athletes who are no longer with us or can no longer take part due to the war. We are drawing attention to the harrowing real life stories behind the 487 statistic to pay tribute to the fallen athletes as a timely reminder of this government’s iron-clad support for Ukraine and its people.”

“The defence of Europe begins in Ukraine and the outcome is down to our collective will. Now is the time to double down on our support so Ukraine not only wins the war, but can forge the bright and ambitious future that Ukrainians deserve.”

Heorhii Tykhyi, Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, said: “Every Ukrainian athlete at the Olympics represents the Ukrainian will to win, Volia. By acting swiftly and with united efforts, the prospect of a world where Ukrainian athletes and citizens are free from the threats posed by Russia will be a reality.”

Global Athletes Stand United with Ukraine

Current and former Olympic athletes worldwide have expressed solidarity with Ukraine. Among them:

  • Sasha Cohen, Ukrainian-American figure skater
  • Oksana Masters, Ukrainian-American Paralympic athlete
  • German biathlete Jens Steinigen and coach Wolfgang Pichler
  • Former Ukrainian Olympic wrestler Oksana Rakhra

Sasha Cohen said: “I’ve always believed in the power of sport to unite and inspire. But today, I’m not just speaking as an athlete. I’m speaking as the daughter of a Ukrainian immigrant, my mother, Galina. I’ve grown up with stories of Ukraine, our culture, our people, and their resilience.”

“I stand in awe of the Ukrainian athletes participating in the Olympics and think of those who we are missing and have lost to the war. Their courage and determination embody the spirit of my mother’s homeland, and I stand with them in solidarity. Together, we can show the world the power of unity in sport.”

UK Firm on Support for Ukraine

The tribute follows Prime Minister’s hosting of President Zelenskyy after the European Political Community summit. Discussions focused on boosting cooperation and industrial support for Ukraine.

The UK has pledged nearly £12.7 billion in military, humanitarian, and economic aid since February 2022, including £3 billion annually in military support “for as long as it takes.”

This powerful display reminds us all: behind every number is a human life lost to brutal conflict—many of whom were poised to shine on the world’s biggest sporting stage.
