Russian Journalist Jailed Over Ukraine Reports

Gorno-Altaysk, Russia – August 30, 2024 — Russian reporter Mikhail Mikhailov has been slammed with a prison sentence and a four-year ban on journalism. The 48-year-old was found guilty of inciting “political hatred” by a court in Gorno-Altaysk, a city in Russia’s southern Altay region. His harsh punishment has sparked fury among human rights groups and free speech advocates worldwide.

Arrest Followed Reporting on War Atrocities

Mikhailov was nabbed near Moscow in 2022 after publishing explosive reports on civilian killings in Bucha and the brutal bombardment of Mariupol — two of the darkest chapters in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. His work appeared on the Telegram channel and website of Listok, an independent media outlet.

Journalist Slams Kremlin Lies in Court

At trial, Mikhailov fiercely defended his reporting. He called out the Kremlin for painting Ukraine’s leadership as “fascist” in an attempt to mislead the public. “My publications aimed to dispel these lies, so my readers wouldn’t be misled, wouldn’t participate in conflicts, and wouldn’t harm the Ukrainian people,” he said in a powerful statement shared on social media.

International Outcry as Media Crackdown Intensifies

Despite denying the charges, Mikhailov faces jail time and a gag order on any publishing activities for the next four years. His defence team is set to appeal next week.

The case underscores Russia’s growing clampdown on free press since its 2022 invasion of Ukraine. It has triggered international outrage, with human rights groups demanding Mikhailov’s immediate release and calling for stronger protections for journalists courageously reporting the truth inside Russia.
