Georgia Fire Chief Dies in Fiery Tractor-Trailer Blast
A brave Georgia battalion chief has been killed in the line of duty. Greene County Fire Rescue’s Chris Eddy died responding to a horrific tractor-trailer blaze near Greensboro on September 4.
Explosion Claims Hero’s Life
Chief Eddy and his team were battling the fire on State Route 15 when a “violent explosion” rocked the scene as they opened the back of the truck. Morgan County Fire Chief Garret Smith told the Morgan County Citizen the blast critically injured Eddy, who later passed away from his wounds.
“GCFR has no words right now. We are truly in disbelief. Pray for our department over the next few days and weeks ahead. RIP Chief Eddy!”
Tributes Flood In for Fallen Firefighter
Eddy joined Greene County Fire Rescue in 2019 and was promoted to battalion chief within two years. He also fought fires part-time in Morgan County. Chief Smith said,
“Chris was a fireman’s fireman, always ready to help, always willing to teach, and always ready to respond. Chris embodied everything a fireman is.”
Investigation Underway Into Deadly Blaze
The cause of the fire and explosion remains under investigation. Eddy’s body has been sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab for autopsy, according to the Greene County Coroner’s Office.
The community of Greensboro, about 30 miles southeast of Athens, Georgia, is left in shock, mourning a true hero whose dedication saved lives.
