Brutal Attacker Jailed for 12 Years
David Joseph, 31, a violent predator with no fixed address, was locked up for 12 years at Inner London Crown Court on Thursday, 6 April. He was found guilty after a trial on 24 February of rape, sexual assault, attempted strangulation, robbery, and possession of cannabis.
Horrific Attack in Burgess Park
The court heard how Joseph met the victim for the first time near Burgess Park in the early hours of 25 September. After a brief chat, he drop-called her to give her his number — but she didn’t save it or plan to call back.
Despite her refusals, Joseph kept insisting she stop for a drink. When she agreed, he tried to kiss her — and when she said no, he turned vicious. He held her hands behind her back, raped and sexually assaulted her, ignoring her desperate pleas to stop.
Joseph strangled her, taunting, “Stop struggling,” and “You’re a fighter, aren’t you?” The victim made several attempts to escape, but Joseph chased her down and tackled her to the ground.
Predator Rustles Off on Bike with Victim’s Phones and Bank Card
After the brutal assault, Joseph stole the woman’s two mobile phones and bank card before cycling away. Injured and bleeding, the victim ran to a busy road where she got help. Police and specialist officers supported her through the ordeal.
Swift Arrest and Tough Justice
Officers quickly identified Joseph from the drop call he made before the attack. He was arrested at a Southwark hostel later that same day, found with the stolen bank card and cannabis. He refused to answer questions during police interviews.
Detective Constable Olivia Broughton said: “Joseph is a dangerous, violent predator who carried out an atrocious, prolonged attack on a lone woman – who repeatedly begged him to stop. When the victim bravely tried to fight back, he just used more violence to carry out his heinous crime. Thanks to her courage, Joseph is now behind bars and off the streets. Tackling violence against women remains a priority for the Met.”
