Five Years for Fatal Brawl in Hertford

Stuart Smith, 43, from Ware, Hertfordshire, has been jailed for five years after fatally attacking Wayne Ambridge, a 50-year-old amputee, in a Tesco car park. The clash left Wayne dead five days after the violent incident on 4 November 2023.

Family Feud Spirals Into Fatal Violence

The deadly showdown stemmed from a bitter family dispute. Tensions soared between Mr Ambridge’s son, Reece, and Abi Lynn, daughter of Smith’s partner, Karen Lynn. The families’ strained relations came to a head in a savage confrontation.

Dashcam Shows Threats Before the Attack

Wayne was returning with his family from a firework display when the trouble began. Charlie Penn, Karen Lynn’s son, followed them in his car and was caught on dashcam threatening, “I’m gonna run him over if he gets out.” His mother replied, “That’ll damage your car,” and even offered to join the attack.

Guilty Verdicts and Cleared Defendants

  • Smith admitted manslaughter and was also found guilty of actual bodily harm against Reece Ambridge.
  • Karen Lynn, 42, was cleared of murder. The jury couldn’t reach a verdict on her manslaughter charge.
  • Her son, Charlie Penn, 21, was cleared of both murder and manslaughter.

Wayne’s son, Reece, paid tribute, calling his father a “hero” who tried to shield him during the attack.
