Mum and Son Treated for Smoke Inhalation After Erith House Fire; One Cat Dies

 

A mother and her son were treated at the scene of a house fire in Erith, which tragically claimed the life of one of their two cats. The uk/news/uk/Fire" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked" data-wpil-monitor-id="123564">fire broke out on Jenningtree Road on Sunday, October 13, at around 4:14 p.m.

Four fire engines and approximately 25 firefighters from the london/">London" href="https:///uknip.co.uk/news/uk/LONDON" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked" data-wpil-monitor-id="123565">London Fire Brigade responded to the blaze. By the time crews arrived, four people had safely evacuated the house. London Ambulance Service treated the mother and her son for smoke inhalation at the scene.

Firefighters managed to rescue two cats from the property, but sadly, one of them died.

The fire, which was brought under control by 5:55 p.m., is being treated as accidental. It is believed to have been caused by the catastrophic failure of lithium batteries, which can be highly dangerous when damaged or overcharged.

A spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade highlighted the risks associated with lithium batteries. Lithium batteries store a significant amount of energy in a very small space and are much more powerful compared to other types of batteries. If that energy is released in an uncontrolled way, a fire or explosion may result,” they explained.

The fire brigade warned that lithium battery fires can be extremely dangerous, producing hot jets of flame, melting metal, and releasing toxic vapours. They urged the public to take precautions when storing and charging lithium batteries, recommending that devices be charged outside the home if possible or in a room with smoke detection and a secure means of escape.
