London Fire Brigade Sounds Alarm Over Surge in Firework Chaos
The London Fire Brigade has issued a stark warning as firework-related incidents skyrocket across the capital this October. With Halloween, Bonfire Night, and Diwali just around the corner, the brigade is urging Londoners to handle fireworks with care—and not to mess around.
Fireworks Out of Control: Trouble Spots Across London
In the last month alone, firefighters scrambled to roughly two firework mishaps every week. Notorious incidents include:
- Wild fireworks letting off in public in Battersea
- Balcony firework displays in Stockwell
- Misuse reports from Northolt and Penge
- Youth-led firework antics in Notting Hill
- Smoke-filled flats in Southwark due to reckless fireworks
- Disruptive firework flare-ups in Blackheath
School Blaze in Enfield: Youths Blamed for Fire
The worst hit was a secondary school fire in Enfield last week, where fireworks believed to be deliberately set off by a gang of youths triggered a blaze. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but the event rattled the city.
The Metropolitan Police said:
“An investigation was launched following a fire at a school in Enfield on 23 October. This fire appears to have been deliberately started by a group of young people aiming fireworks at the building, and our enquiries are ongoing. We will be patrolling during Halloween and Fireworks Night to respond to anti-social behaviour.”
Safety First: Fire Brigade Urges Responsible Celebrations
Assistant Commissioner Craig Carter hit out at reckless firework use:
“It’s alarming to see so many incidents caused by people misusing fireworks. As fireworks become more accessible, we urge the public to attend organised displays instead. Parents should talk to their children about the dangers.”
The brigade reminds everyone fireworks are explosives and must be handled strictly per the Fireworks Code and manufacturer’s rules. Illegal sales to under-18s carry harsh punishments, including unlimited fines and possible jail time.
Tower Hamlets Tops the Danger Charts
Data reveals Tower Hamlets is the capital’s hotspot for firework chaos, with 685 fire calls since 2010—60% on Bonfire Night alone. Other boroughs flaring up include Ealing, Newham, Enfield, and Hounslow, racking up hundreds of calls.
The London Fire Brigade continues to press Londoners to play safe with fireworks this season, keeping streets safe and emergency crews free for genuine emergencies.
