A large-scale protest by farmers took place in Whitehall today, with thousands gathering to voice their concerns. The event, which drew significant attention, caused road closures and disruptions but concluded peacefully.
10,000+ Protesters Gather
The Metropolitan Police estimated that over 10,000 protesters attended the event, with the crowd stretching beyond the Cenotaph. The protest focused on issues affecting the farming community, although specific demands were not detailed in the policy updates.
The event is underway in Whitehall with no issues to report. Both lanes are closed south of Horse Guards. Diversions are in place and motorists are advised to use other routes,” the Met Police stated.
Protest Changes Plans Due to Crowd Size
Initially, the protest was expected to march to Parliament Square, but the organizers decided to remain in Whitehall due to the size of the crowd. Protesters brought tractors as part of the demonstration, adding a striking visual to the event.
Tractor Incident and Dispersal
While most attendees followed police instructions, a few incidents were reported.
“Driving over a police barrier line is not acceptable, and the drivers will be reported for the offence,” said the Met Police after some tractors reportedly broke through barricades.
As the official protest concluded, the crowd began to disperse. Police asked those remaining to move onto pavements to allow roads to reopen.
Roads Reopened
The area around Parliament has now largely returned to normal, with all roads open except the southbound carriageway of Whitehall from Horse Guards to Parliament Square. This road will reopen once the protest stage is fully removed.
The Met Police issued a final update, thanking attendees for their cooperation:
“The area around Parliament is now returning to normal. This will be the final update from today’s event.”
