Two Men Jailed for 44 Years Over Brutal Croydon Attack That Killed Young Brother
Deadly Assault Rocks New Addington
Two men from Purley have been handed a combined 44 years behind bars for the savage killing of 20-year-old Bradley Hutchins and the horrific stabbing of his 19-year-old brother, Calum. Shane Canavan, 23, and his half-brother Joshua Langley, 29, both from Greyfields Close, received life sentences at Woolwich Crown Court on 29 November. Canavan faces a minimum 23 years, while Langley must serve at least 21 years for their roles in the deadly attack.
Attack Details Revealed
The violent incident unfolded on 12 September 2023 in North Walk, New Addington, after police were alerted to a weapon-fuelled brawl. Paramedics found Bradley and Calum suffering from multiple stab wounds at a nearby ambulance station. Despite attempts to save him, Bradley died shortly after reaching hospital. Calum survived but carries severe physical and emotional scars.
A Premeditated Revenge Attack
The court heard this wasn’t a random act. The attack was retaliation after Canavan lost a fight the prior week. Armed with a crowbar, monkey wrench, knife, and wearing balaclavas, the pair launched a brutal assault. Police swiftly arrested Canavan on 16 September and Langley the next day. The Met’s Specialist Crime Command pieced together a watertight case with CCTV, witness statements, and forensic evidence leading to their conviction for murder and wounding with intent.
Family Speaks Out – Heartbreak and Hope
“Our whole world was turned upside down when Bradley was cruelly taken from us. Bradley and Calum had a special bond, and the effect on Calum of losing his brother has been utterly devastating,” said Bradley’s mother.
“Bradley had such a presence when he walked into a room. He was always happy, known for his infectious smile, and so kind and gentle. He hated injustice and always stood up for the truth. I will ensure my son’s name and memory lives on forever, and I will continue to fight against knife crime.”
Police Praise and Knife Crime Fight
Detective Inspector Matt Read, who led the investigation, praised witnesses and Bradley’s family for their bravery:
“We hope this sentence brings a level of peace and a feeling of justice to Bradley’s family after the utter devastation they have suffered. We worked tirelessly to identify the suspects and build a watertight case to bring them to justice.”
This case highlights the Metropolitan Police’s ongoing crackdown on knife crime in London. As part of A New Met for London, the force is redoubling efforts to prevent violence and provide support for vulnerable youth.
Bradley’s family want his tragic death to spur stronger action against knife crime to protect future generations.
