London City Airport Evacuated After Suspicious Bag Sparks Panic
Bomb scare triggers chaos
London City Airport was plunged into chaos this afternoon after concerns over an unattended bag sparked a full evacuation. At 4:39pm on Monday, February 3, police swooped on the scene, emptying the airport’s landside area as a precaution.
Hundreds of passengers were forced out and left stranded in the car park while police investigated the suspicious package.
Passengers left stranded outside
One traveller stuck in the queue vented their frustration on social media: “London City Airport seemingly evacuated? In queue with several hundred people now in the parking lot.”
A police helicopter was spotted circling overhead, while inbound flights were held in holding patterns, adding to the disruption.
All clear and operations resume
Thankfully, the police later confirmed the bag was harmless. A spokesman for London City Airport said: “The landside area was briefly evacuated as a precaution. We apologise for the inconvenience but the safety of passengers and staff is our number one priority.”
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson added: “Police were called following concerns about an unattended bag. It was found to be nothing of concern and the cordon has now been lifted.”
Heightened security remains in focus
Normal service resumed but some delays are expected as airports tighten up security in the wake of the scare. London City Airport reassured the public that all necessary safety measures were taken to protect travellers and staff.
