A shocking break-in at Byron Lodge Care Home in West Melton, Rotherham, has left elderly residents terrified after thieves smashed their way in and stole a safe containing cash and precious sentimental jewellery.
The callous raid struck in the dead of night on Monday, January 27, 2025, between 12:35 AM and 1:45 AM, triggering a full-scale police investigation.
Thieves Target Vulnerable Elderly Residents
South Yorkshire Police revealed the burglars bypassed the care home’s security and fled with a significant amount of cash and irreplaceable jewellery belonging to the home’s vulnerable residents.
Officers are combing through CCTV footage and conducting door-to-door enquiries as they scramble to catch the heartless criminals.
Detective Inspector Mark Withers called it “a heartless crime that has caused immense distress to some of the most vulnerable members of our community.”
“These individuals preyed on elderly residents who should feel safe in their own home. We are treating this as a priority and urge anyone with information to come forward immediately.”
Community Outraged Over Callous Crime
The heist has sparked fury across Rotherham, with locals condemning the thieves as utterly despicable and cruel.
Lisa Carter, whose elderly mother lives at Byron Lodge, said:
“It’s absolutely disgusting that someone would target a care home. These people have no shame. The jewellery stolen wasn’t just valuable—it had deep sentimental meaning to my mum.”
