Emergency services rushed to Plumstead Road outside Woolwich Covered Market this morning after a person became trapped under a Transport for London (TfL) bus.
The incident occurred near the busy Woolwich town center, prompting a large-scale response from London Fire Brigade, London Ambulance Service, and Metropolitan Police. Crews arrived swiftly on the scene to assess the situation and begin the delicate task of rescuing the trapped individual.
The condition of the trapped individual has not yet been confirmed, but London Ambulance Service stated that they were providing life-saving care at the scene before transporting the person to hospital.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene as emergency services cordoned off the area and bystanders looked on anxiously. “It was terrifying to see,” said one passerby. “People were shouting for help, and within minutes, police and ambulances were everywhere.”
Plumstead Road is temporarily closed in both directions to allow emergency services to work safely, causing significant traffic delays in the area. TfL buses were diverted, and Woolwich Arsenal station saw increased congestion as commuters sought alternative routes.
The Metropolitan Police source on scene confirmed they will investigating the circumstances leading to the incident and are working with TfL to review CCTV footage from the area.
Local authorities have urged anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage to contact the police to assist with their ongoing investigation.
Plumstead Road has since partially reopened, but delays are expected to continue throughout the day as police continue their inquiries.
