Deadly Missile Strike Tears Through Sumy on Palm Sunday

A brutal Russian ballistic missile slammed into the Ukrainian city of Sumy on Palm Sunday, killing at least 20 civilians and wounding dozens more. The attack struck early morning, flattening homes, schools, and cars in a densely populated neighbourhood.

Palm Sunday Horror in Sumy

The missile exploded as residents prepared to celebrate Palm Sunday, a key Christian festival, adding to the shock and pain. Sumy lies just 30km from the Russian border, making it a frequent target but this strike stands out for its deadly impact on civilians.

“Enemy missiles hit an ordinary city street, ordinary life, houses, educational institutions, cars on the street,” said Ukraine’s State Emergency Service.

Artem Kobzar, acting mayor of Sumy, called the strike “a deliberate attack on civilians” in a grim Telegram post.

Rescue Teams Race Against Time

Emergency crews and volunteers are desperately pulling people from the rubble. Burned-out cars and collapsed buildings litter the area as survivors are treated on site. Ukrainian officials vowed all resources are being deployed.

“All necessary services are working. Rescue teams are doing everything they can to save lives.”

Witnesses described a deafening blast followed by chaos, with terrified families fleeing homes and churches.

Outrage and Global Condemnation

The attack sparked fury online and from world leaders. One user blasted on X (formerly Twitter):

“Sumy bleeds again—civilians targeted on a holy day. This is a war crime.”

Humanitarian groups like the Red Cross and Médecins Sans Frontières are gearing up to aid recovery efforts. The UN slammed attacks targeting civilians as “among the gravest breaches of international law.”

Sumy: A Frontline City Under Fire

Sumy has been on the frontline since Russia’s 2022 invasion began. Its close proximity to Russia makes it a strategic—though deadly—target. The city suffered a similar strike in March 2025 that wounded nearly 100, including 23 children.

Critics decry the high civilian toll as evidence of callous disregard for human life.

Mourning and Resolve

Religious leaders across Europe have voiced solidarity with Sumy’s people, urging peace and justice. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to address the nation tonight. Meanwhile, Sumy has declared two days of mourning as clean-up and recovery continue.
