Network Rail Fixes Brighton Main Line Landslip Just in Time

Network Rail has rescued the Brighton Main Line from chaos after a dangerous landslip threatened to derail travel between Three Bridges and Gatwick Airport. The swift repairs mean trains are back on track with no major delays.

Emergency Repairs Stave Off Rail Chaos

Discovered in late January 2025, the landslip endangered one of the South of England’s busiest routes. Engineers sprang into action, erecting a 30-metre sheet pile wall to stabilise the embankment. This clever move kept trains running smoothly while urgent works got underway.

Stone Reinforcement and Eco-Care to Secure the Line

To lock in the fix, the embankment was reshaped and packed with thousands of tonnes of stone. Because the site sits near a local allotment and the Gatwick stream, daily environmental checks were carried out. Special care protected sensitive wildlife like dormice and newts.

Network Rail also gave back to the community, installing dormice and bird boxes, restoring allotment vegetable beds, and donating leftover hay to a nearby donkey sanctuary.

Key Voices Praise Team Effort

Lucy McAuliffe, Sussex Route Director for Network Rail, said:

“A landslip near Three Bridges had the potential to cause major disruption to passengers and freight. Thanks to the tireless work of our colleagues, trains remained operational throughout the process.”

“We’re also grateful to local residents and passengers for their patience during the works.”

The Brighton Main Line is now fully operational after the crucial repairs, keeping one of the South’s vital rail routes safe and sound.
