Young Leonna Among Children Trapped Under Fallen Tree
Leonna Ruka, just seven years old from Dagenham, east London, has tragically died after a tree partially collapsed in Chalkwell Park, Southend. The horrific incident happened shortly before 3pm on Saturday, June 28.
Several children were caught beneath the fallen tree. Despite emergency crews rushing Leonna to hospital, she later succumbed to her injuries.
Desperate Rescue Effort
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as up to 50 people sprang into action trying to free the trapped children before emergency services arrived. Their frantic efforts highlighted the panic and desperation at the scene.
Essex Police confirmed a six-year-old girl remains in critical condition, while three other children suffered minor injuries.

“Leonna was more than just a child – she was an intelligent and curious soul, full of energy and creativity. A little girl who was always exploring, always asking questions, always dreaming. She had a heart full of love and a mind full of endless ideas,” the grieving family said.

Essex Police have launched a formal investigation into the cause of the tree collapse. Forensic teams and council officials are examining the scene to understand how this tragic accident happened.
A police spokesperson said, “This is a deeply tragic incident and our thoughts are with Leonna’s family and all those affected. We are working to understand exactly how this happened.”
Tributes continue to pour in at Chalkwell Park. Flowers, teddy bears, and heartfelt messages have been left near the tree in memory of young Leonna.
