A passenger train carrying around 100 people has derailed in southwestern Germany, leaving several passengers dead and others seriously injured. Emergency services are on scene conducting a large-scale rescue operation.
The incident occurred at approximately 6.10pm local time near Zwiefaltendorf, in the Biberach district of Baden‑Württemberg, close to Germany’s southwestern border.
What We Know So Far
According to Bild and FOCUS Online, at least two carriages of a Deutsche Bahn regional express train left the tracks. Initial reports indicate multiple fatalities, while at least three passengers have been confirmed injured — though the extent of their injuries is still unclear.
A spokesperson for the Federal Police Stuttgart told Bild:
“Two carriages of the Deutsche Bahn regional express have derailed. At least three are injured. The severity of their injuries cannot be confirmed at this time.”
Rescue workers are actively searching the wreckage for trapped passengers, with fire crews and paramedics working alongside police and railway officials.
Location and Rail Disruption
The derailment happened between Munderkingen and Sigmaringen, a stretch of railway often used by commuters and regional travellers. The line is closed until further notice, causing significant disruption to services across the region.
Deutsche Bahn has yet to release an official statement regarding the cause, but heavy rainfall and storm damage in the area have raised questions about possible track obstructions.
Emergency Response
Images shared by local media show rescue teams using ladders and cutting tools to gain access to carriages. Helicopters and ambulances are on standby to transport the injured to nearby hospitals.
