A colossal 2,000lb Second World War sea mine was accidentally pulled up by the fishing vessel Cara Lee off the Isle of Wight. The seven-foot, German-made device was snagged in nets near the Needles at around 8am on Saturday.

After an initial attempt to make the mine safe, it became clear just how volatile the relic was. A controlled explosion was planned to neutralise the threat.

Huge Blast Clears 2-Mile Zone

An exclusion zone stretching 2 miles was enforced while the navy attached a charge to the mine. When the explosion went off, cheers erupted as the diver confirmed the job was a success.

The dramatic controlled detonation ensured the unexploded bomb was safely destroyed, preventing potential disaster.
