Sunak’s bold move sets up a fiery showdown with his old boss, Boris Johnson, who has yet to officially declare his own bid.
Sunak Vows to Fix Economy and Unite Party
Sunak said, “I want to fix our economy, unite our Party, and deliver for our country.” He announced his leadership intentions just a day prior, signalling a fresh battle for the Tory crown.
Reports say Johnson, freshly back from a Caribbean holiday, met with Sunak on Saturday night. But no official run from Johnson yet.
Penny Mordaunt in the Race, But Trailing Behind
- Penny Mordaunt, Commons Leader and ex-defence minister, is the only other confirmed candidate.
- This is her second stab at Tory leadership after losing to Liz Truss in 2008.
Leadership Ballot: The Numbers Game
To get on the ballot, candidates must secure at least 100 Tory MP backers by 1pm Monday GMT.
