People Smuggler Nabbed After Skipping Court, Jailed for Eight Years
Tarik Namik, 45, from Oldham, dodged court in December but didn’t dodge justice. The National Crime Agency (NCA) sentenced him to eight years behind bars – in his absence.
Head of Migrant Smuggling Gang Arrested on UK Soil
Namik led a ruthless organised crime group smuggling desperate migrants from Iraq and Iran into the UK hidden in lorries. The NCA launched an investigation back in 2017. When Namik skipped his court date on December 9th, a warrant was issued.
He was finally arrested the moment he landed at Manchester Airport on a flight from Istanbul, thanks to quick moves by Greater Manchester Police and the NCA.
Justice Served for Vulnerable Migrants Exploited
“Namik was a prolific people smuggler whose criminal organisation put vulnerable migrants in danger while he profited,” said NCA branch commander Richard Harrison.
“I am overjoyed that he will now face justice for the crimes he committed.”
Four other gang members were also handed sentences following the crackdown.
Namik to Face Crown Court After Magistrates’ Hearing
Scheduled to appear at Manchester Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, Namik is now set for sentencing at the Crown Court on Monday. The NCA made it clear – fugitives don’t stay hidden for long.
