Starmer Targets Trump Over Iran Fallout

Keir Starmer lashed out at Donald Trump today, blaming the former US President for plunging the Middle East into ‘chaos’. At a Downing Street press conference, Starmer insisted he does, in fact, have a grip on the spiralling crisis.

The Prime Minister dismissed mounting criticism over Britain’s lack of military readiness and the unravelling of the ‘Special Relationship’ with the US. He vowed to provide “calm, level-headed leadership” and urged the nation to pull together.

Military Moves: UK Boosts Defences

Starmer revealed Britain has been sending resources, including anti-aircraft missiles, to the region since December. Helicopters capable of shooting down missiles and drones are due to arrive in the Mediterranean tomorrow, with more Typhoon jets deploying to Qatar.

Despite the turmoil, the PM said: “While the region has been plunged into chaos, my focus is providing calm, level-headed leadership in the national interest.” He warned: “This conflict could continue for some time.”

Special Relationship in Tatters

The spat with Trump is intensifying. The US President reportedly calls Starmer a “loser” behind closed doors and publicly dismissed him as “no Churchill” after the UK refused to let the US launch strikes on Iran from British bases.

Starmer claimed the Transatlantic ties are still functioning despite the row. “It’s for me as the British PM to take the decisions I consider to be in the best interests of the UK,” he stated.

Humiliation Over Cyprus Defence

Starmer’s efforts to shake off criticism have been rocked by reports that more European countries are rushing to protect the RAF’s Akrotiri base in Cyprus. Spain is joining France, Italy, and the Netherlands in sending naval forces to the Eastern Mediterranean, while Britain currently has no ships in the area.

HMS Dragon, a Type 45 air defence destroyer, won’t set sail until next week. This contrast has sparked claims of British “humiliation”. Nigel Farage slammed the government’s response as chaotic, calling Starmer a “follower not a leader” and accusing the UK of upsetting allies across the Middle East and beyond.

RAF Akrotiri was recently hit by an Iranian drone, causing minor damage but raising serious questions about local air defences. The drone struck a hangar used by US U2 spy planes flying reconnaissance missions.

Labour Backbenchers and National Security Council Clash

Behind the scenes, insiders say Labour MPs Ed Miliband, Rachel Reeves, and Yvette Cooper urged Starmer to reject the US request for strikes. The party is under huge pressure to avoid being seen as backing military action after suffering a humiliating defeat to the Greens in the Gorton & Denton by-election.

Security sources revealed tensions during last Friday’s National Security Council meeting, with Miliband adopting a “petulant, pacifist, legalistic and very political” stance that complicated the PM’s decision-making.

Political Fallout Continues

Labour MP John McDonnell told ITV it was no surprise Starmer turned down the US request: “We’d just lost a by-election, with local elections on the horizon. I’m not sure he would have survived as PM if he’d gone along with Trump automatically.”

While Starmer pushes to show leadership amid chaos, the fallout from the Middle East flare-up and the rocky US-UK relations look set to dominate British politics for weeks to come.
