A dramatic hostage situation near a synagogue in Baltimore ended with a gunman shot dead by SWAT officers after a woman escaped by throwing herself through a window during the confrontation.
Police were called to a home on Park Heights Avenue in the city’s quiet Glen neighbourhood shortly after 12.30pm on Tuesday following reports of a burglary. The property is located just steps from the Agudath Israel of Baltimore synagogue, an Orthodox Jewish place of worship.
Woman Escapes as Gunman Holds Hostage
According to Richard Worley, officers discovered a tense situation unfolding inside the residence where a woman was being held at gunpoint.
Police radio traffic indicated that officers were taking sniper fire from the residence, forcing them to take cover behind vehicles as shots rang out.
Officer Injured During Shootout
During the exchange of gunfire, one police officer was shot in the leg and rushed to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Centre, where officials said he was in stable condition.
Another officer applied a tourniquet at the scene before paramedics transported the injured officer to the hospital.
Authorities later confirmed that the gunman – believed to be related to the residents of the property – was shot and killed by a SWAT officer as the situation escalated.
Heavy Police Response Near Synagogue
The unfolding drama triggered a large emergency response, with officers from multiple agencies rushing to the area. Footage filmed by local residents showed police vehicles, armed officers and paramedics surrounding the scene as streets were quickly sealed off.
Initial reports suggested the incident may have been linked to the nearby synagogue, prompting concern within the community. However, investigators later clarified the shooting stemmed from the residence, not the place of worship.
The synagogue hosts daily prayer services, including a 12.30pm afternoon prayer, though it remains unclear whether worshippers were present when the incident began.
Mayor Praises Officers’ Response
Baltimore officials praised the rapid response of officers who confronted the gunman.
Mayor Brandon Scott said authorities were relieved the situation did not lead to further casualties.
“We’re just thankful that the officer and anyone else in that neighbourhood were not severely harmed,” he said.
“Our thoughts are with him and his family, and even the family of the deceased.”
Investigation Continues
Authorities urged residents to avoid the 6200 block of Park Heights Avenue while investigators examined the scene.
Maryland Governor Wes Moore also issued a statement expressing support for the police officers and emergency crews involved in the incident.
“We have been in close contact with the Baltimore Police Department and stand ready to provide any state support that may be needed,” he said.
Police say the investigation into the shooting and the events leading up to the hostage situation remains ongoing.
