Family Breaks Silence on York Jewellers Tragedy – Sam Diatta Remembered
Beloved Son and Brother Passes Away
The family of 39-year-old Sam Diatta, who died in an incident at Mappin and Webb jewellers on Coney Street, York, on July 26, 2022, have paid an emotional tribute today. “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our beloved son and brother Sam Diatta,” they said.
Sam was a cherished family member, deeply loved by friends and relatives around the world.
A Life Well Lived – Sports, Faith, and Family
Half Senegalese, Sam’s Senegalese roots meant the world to him. He was a passionate sports fan, cheering for both England and Senegal football teams and playing rugby for York RI.
Born and raised in York, Sam attended local schools and was well known and liked in his community. He enjoyed scouting, camping, and was a devout Christian who co-founded the York College Christian Union. As a teen, he was baptised at Acomb Baptist Church.
Fighting Rumours, Demand for Respect
Sam battled mental health issues quietly for years. The family describe him as a “gentle giant” — kind, generous, and loved by all.
They express distress over false claims online implying Sam was linked to a robbery. “This is false information,” confirm North Yorkshire Police, and the family ask for these rumours to stop immediately.
