Inferno at Bedford Flats: Gas Explosion Triggers Major Blaze
Gas Blast Sparks Massive Fire at Redwood Grove
A devastating gas explosion ripped through a block of flats on Redwood Grove, Bedford, causing a major fire and forcing dozens of residents to flee. Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service declared it a “major incident” after the blaze engulfed the entire building, causing a large section of the roof to collapse.
Residents Escape From Burning Building
Eyewitnesses reported seeing one terrified resident leap from a second-floor window to escape the inferno. Emergency services scrambled to the scene where 20 flats were affected, with two people rushed to hospital – one with serious injuries.
Three Hospitalised Including Firefighter
The East of England Ambulance Service confirmed three admissions. One victim was airlifted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital with leg injuries, while two others, including a firefighter, were treated for smoke inhalation at Bedford South Wing Hospital.
Evacuations and Emergency Response Underway
Bedfordshire Police, firefighters, and ambulance crews remained at the scene shortly after midday on Monday. Adjacent flats were also evacuated, with Bedford Borough Council setting up an emergency centre at the John Bunyan Centre to assist displaced residents.
Nearby School Shut After Fire
Shackleton Primary School, close to the blaze, sent pupils home as a precaution. Headteacher Andy George said: “Following the fire in the Redwood Grove area of Bedford earlier today, pupils at Shackleton Primary have been sent home due to the school’s proximity to the incident. All children are safe.” The school plans to reopen tomorrow.
