Underage Volunteers Nab Booze from Half of Brighton’s Licensed Premises!
Brighton & Hove Police pulled off a sneaky sting in November, sending underage volunteers into six licensed spots across the city for test purchases. The result? Three passed, but shockingly, three failed – selling booze to kids!
Alcopops, Ciders, and Pre-Mixed Cans Sold to Under-18s
The volunteers, all under 18, easily bought a bottle of alcopop, a bottle of cider, and a pre-mixed can from three different shops. This blatant breach of the law has put those premises under the spotlight.
Community Resolutions and Tough Talks for Failing Outlets
Following the sting, police issued three community resolutions and arranged meetings with the offending venues. Formal warning letters have been sent, and fresh actions are being planned to stop these sales from happening again.
Brighton Police Vow to Protect the City
“Purchasing alcohol when under 18 is illegal. It’s also against the law to drink in public under 18. Our licensing team works year-round to ensure venues follow the four licence rules: preventing crime, ensuring public safety, stopping nuisance, and protecting children from harm,” said a Brighton & Hove police spokesperson.
“We can’t be everywhere, but we could be anywhere! Think 25!”
