£100k Boost for Groundbreaking Pancreatic Cancer Blood Test

Cancer Research UK is pumping nearly £100,000 into University of Edinburgh scientists, led by Dr. Marta Canel, to develop a blood test that could spot pancreatic cancer early – before it’s too late. This deadly cancer is usually caught when treatment options are scarce, making early diagnosis crucial.

Cracking the Cancer Code: Targeting Genes KRAS, SMAD4 & CDKN2A

Pancreatic cancer is a top killer in the UK, largely because it’s diagnosed too late. The Edinburgh team will zero in on gene changes in KRAS, SMAD4, and CDKN2A, which turbocharge cancer growth. They want to see how these mutations create specific biomarkers that could show up in a simple blood test.

A reliable blood test would spare patients invasive biopsies, which are tough due to the pancreas’s tricky location and its key role in controlling blood sugar and digestion.

Screening High-Risk Groups & Precision Medicine on the Horizon

Such a test could also screen high-risk groups – like older people and those who develop type 2 diabetes later in life. Dr. Canel said, “Diagnosing pancreatic cancer at an early stage when surgery remains possible and treatment more effective is critical to patients.”

While a proven biomarker remains elusive, Dr. Canel’s previous work found blood markers linked to tumours with KRAS mutations. Mapping these gene quirks could unlock precision medicine tailored to each patient’s needs.

Dr. Catherine Elliott from Cancer Research UK added, “Precision medicine is a growing area of cancer research, and we hope this project will shed new light on pancreatic cancer.”

Opening Doors to New Treatments, Including Immunotherapy

The project might also expose weaknesses in pancreatic cancer that could be tackled with fresh or existing treatments, like immunotherapy – currently unavailable for this tough cancer.

Since surgery is often the only effective treatment if caught early enough, this research could be a game changer for improving survival rates and giving patients a fighting chance.
