Somerstown in Shock as Man Suffers Serious Injuries in Brutal Late-Night Attack
A key road in Somerstown remains shut to both drivers and pedestrians this morning following a savage assault that left a 20-year-old man fighting for his life. The victim, from Birmingham, was seriously injured in a violent attack on Peel Place just before midnight.
Road Closures and Police Investigation Intensify
Paramedics rushed the man to Queen Alexandra Hospital, where his condition remains serious. Police have extended their cordon from the scene all the way down to the King Street Tavern after vital evidence was found. The case has now been upgraded to an attempted murder investigation.
A 21-year-old suspect has been arrested and is in custody. The entire stretch of Middle Street, from Sackville Street to the King Street Tavern, is sealed off, alongside Peel Place. Officers expect the cordon to stay in place until at least 12:30pm, forcing the pub to remain closed.
Victim’s Desperate Dash for Help
Witnesses say the injured man fled the attack scene and sought help at the nearby King Street Tavern. The pub’s landlord told Spotted Portsmouth: “The victim walked into the King Street Tavern asking for help after being attacked. Our staff called for an ambulance and assisted him.”
Blood pools are visible on the pavement and road behind the police cordon, painting a grim picture of the violent night.
Police Urge Public to Stay Clear and Come Forward
Officers are guarding two key crime scenes and waiting for forensic teams. Detectives urge residents to avoid the area while investigations continue.
