A suspected terrorist ploughed a truck into Temple Israel, Michigan’s biggest Reform synagogue, before opening fire – but a quick-thinking security guard shot him dead on the spot.
Deadly Attack Rocks Michigan Synagogue
The nightmare unfolded at 12:30pm on Thursday in West Bloomfield. The suspect smashed their truck into the synagogue and preschool, then pulled out a rifle and fired at the building.
Smoke poured from the scene as police swarmed in. The suspect’s truck caught fire, forcing a bomb squad to rush in and clear the area.
Heroic Security Guard Stops Gunman
Security staff didn’t hesitate. They confronted the attacker immediately. One guard was hit by the vehicle and rushed to hospital but is expected to recover. The gunman was killed by return fire from the guard.
“As you have no doubt heard, Temple Israel was the victim of a terrorist gunman who was confronted and neutralized by our security personnel who are truly heroes,” said Temple Israel in a statement.
All 140 children at the synagogue’s Early Childhood Center along with staff and teachers are safe.
Lockdowns Lifted After Terror Threat Ends
Synagogues and Jewish schools across the region went into lockdown while police secured the area. The shelter-in-place order was lifted by 3:40pm after officials confirmed the threat was neutralised.
Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said there were no further threats. Medics remained on standby. State police have increased patrols at other places of worship.
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed federal agents are on site investigating both the vehicle attack and shooting.
Community and Officials Respond
The Jewish Federation of Detroit urged all local organisations to keep tightened security measures. They stressed that antisemitism and violence have no place in Michigan.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer condemned the attack and called for calm and continued safety.
The incident recalls a tragic spree months ago, when a man crashed into a Michigan church and opened fire, killing five worshippers.
