Journalist Stabbed in Wimbledon: Police Launch Counter Terror Probe
A man in his 30s, working as a journalist for a UK-based Persian-language media outlet, has been stabbed in broad daylight in Wimbledon, South London. The Metropolitan Police were called to the scene at 2:49pm on Friday, 29 March.
Victim Stable After Leg Injury
Emergency services arrived quickly. Paramedics from the London Ambulance Service treated the victim on site before rushing him to hospital. Thankfully, his injuries are reported as non-life-threatening and his condition remains stable.
Counter Terrorism Command Takes Lead
The motive is still unclear but given the victim’s profession and recent threats to journalists from similar organisations, the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command has stepped in.
“While we are keeping an open mind, given the occupation of the victim and our publicised concerns about the threat to employees of that organisation, the investigation is being led by the Counter Terrorism Command,” said Commander Dominic Murphy.
“I appreciate the wider concern this incident may cause – particularly amongst others in similar lines of work, and those from Iranian communities.”
Extra police patrols have been deployed across Wimbledon and other London areas as a precaution to reassure the public.
Public Urged to Share Information
The investigation continues amid rising tensions linked to wider threats from Iran. Counter Terrorism Policing has been monitoring plots targeting UK-based individuals viewed as enemies of the Iranian regime since 2022.
Officials are asking anyone with information about the stabbing to call police on 0800 789 321.
Authorities also urge the public to stay alert and report any suspicious activity to help keep communities safe.
