Man Killed by Police Car in Birmingham Crash – Independent Probe Launched
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched a full investigation after a tragic road traffic collision in Acocks Green, Birmingham.
A 40-year-old local man died after being hit by a marked West Midlands Police car on Yardley Road near Florence Road at around 7pm on Wednesday, 19 March.
Police Responded with Blue Lights Activated
The police vehicle, carrying two officers, was responding to an emergency with blue lights flashing at the time. Officers immediately provided first aid at the scene before paramedics arrived, but the man was sadly pronounced dead shortly afterwards.
The IOPC was alerted swiftly and declared an independent investigation by 8pm on the same day. Investigators have been gathering evidence at the scene, including taking initial statements from the officers, who are currently treated as witnesses.
IOPC Director Derrick Campbell said:“Our sympathies and thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who died and all those affected by this tragic incident. It happened on a busy road, and we urge anyone who saw what happened or has dashcam or CCTV footage to come forward.”
IOPC Calls for Witnesses and Dashcam Footage

On Thursday, investigators were seen going door-to-door and collecting local CCTV to piece together what happened. The coroner has been informed, and a post-mortem examination is expected soon.
