New Wiltshire Rural Crime Team Takes on Villainy in the Countryside
Wiltshire’s police have launched a tough new rural crime squad aimed at protecting isolated communities and making the county a nightmare for crooks. The team officially kicks off today, 18 September, funded by a recent precept rise and extra cash bagged by Police and Crime Commissioner Angus Macpherson.
Cracking Down on Farming, Wildlife and Heritage Crimes
Focused on agricultural, environmental, wildlife, and heritage crime, the squad aims to boost local confidence and crack down on offenders with smart, intelligence-led ops. It’s manned by one sergeant, three constables, and 35 community officers acting as Wildlife and Heritage Crime specialists. An Inspector leads operations tactically, with special constables stepping in for planned actions.
Officials Say Rural Crime Fighters Will Send a Clear Warning to Criminals
“We live in a predominantly rural county, so policing must match the community’s needs,” said Police and Crime Commissioner Angus Macpherson. “With the extra officers thanks to funding increases, we’re boosting resources to protect our rural areas. This team will conduct more operations, gather vital intelligence, and reassure locals we’re serious about tackling rural crime. We’ll keep working closely with partners through the Rural Crime Partnership to stay ahead of threats.”
Chief Constable Kier Pritchard added, “While we’ve made good progress, criminals are becoming more organised and tech-savvy. This enhanced team will help us run projects and focus on prevention better than ever. We’re determined to make Wiltshire and swindon/" title="Swindon" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Swindon places criminals dread stepping foot in.”
