Drugs Lab Blaze Rips Through Flat in New Cross
Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters battled a fierce blaze at a flat above a shop on Batavia Mews, New Cross. The fire is believed to have started in a drugs factory inside the property.
A police officer was injured in an explosion at the scene and rushed to hospital with burns. Thankfully, her injuries are not considered life-threatening.
Flat Engulfed, Roads Shut
Most of the five-room flat on the third floor was ablaze when fire crews from New Cross, Deptford, Old Kent Road, and Lewisham arrived just after 1.30pm. The London Fire Brigade was called at 1:34pm.
Station Commander James Ryan revealed the chaos: “The A2 New Cross Road, from Lewisham Way to New Cross Gate railway station, was closed and has now reopened. Motorists are advised to avoid the area due to ongoing disruption.”
Explosion Sparks Arrest
Police were called just before 1:32pm after officers heard an explosion upon entering the flat. A 40-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life and grievous bodily harm. He was taken away in a van shielded by a silver sheet.
Neighbours claim the fire was caused by a meth lab operating inside one of the rooms, but this has yet to be confirmed.
Investigation Underway, No Terror Links
The Met Police confirmed the incident is not currently thought to be terror-related. Road closures remain in place along New Cross Road to Clifton Road as emergency services continue their work.
One officer sustained burns from the explosion and is receiving hospital treatment in south London. The investigation into what sparked the fire and explosion is ongoing.
